BACKGROUND
Associate Head of School – Broome Street Academy Charter High School |2019-2022
A tuition-free public charter high school that supports students that are homeless, in foster care, and from low-performing schools.
After 21 years in the Department of Education, I accepted the position of Associate Head of School at a charter school that opened in partnership with The Door in 2011. In this role, I was responsible for academics and the supervision of the teaching staff for a school that serves some of the cities’ most vulnerable children.
Chief of Staff/Instructional Lead- Bronx Division of Teaching & Learning | 2015-2019
A municipal government branch that manages the most extensive school system in the US, with over 1M students in over 1400 schools.
I joined the newly opened Field Support Center in the Bronx inaugurated as the new chancellor reimagined and aligned school support for all of New York City. I endeavored to create systems and structures to support professional learning for the Borough. I led a team of 40 Instructional Leads who provided expertise to schools in all academic areas. This team served to both support schools and to codify the practices for the rest of the organization to follow as the organization grew.
Adjunct Lecturer – City College of New York | 2014-2018
Public college of the City University of New York system founded in 1847 as the first free public institution of higher education.
Director of Operations, Strategy & Policy – Office of NYC Schools Chancellor | 2011-2015
A chancellor's office of the NYC Department of Education that manages the largest US school system with over 1M students in over 1400 schools.
I worked at the Central Office of New York City's Department of Education and was charged with hosting a meeting with each principal in New York City to share the newly developed City-Wide Instructional Expectations. I played an essential role in planning the logistics for a series of meetings that would include collaboration between several offices with different priorities and agendas. I planned the Chancellor's Principal Meeting for all of New York City’s principals and school support staff as well as stakeholders from city government as well as local government. This five-thousand-person meeting designed to set the policy agenda for the coming school year. As the point person for the conference, I worked with senior leadership at the Central Office to create a cohesive message from multiple offices, develop coherent content as well as manage all the logistics of a five-thousand-person full day meeting.
Founding Principal – Aspirations Diploma High School | 2008-2011
A transfer high school located in Crown Heights designated to support students who need small learning environments, fall behind in credits, or previously dropped out to get to graduation.
I was elected to open a Transfer School in New York City. During the two years between the selection and the day the School opened, I attended the New York City Leadership Academy, earning a Master's degree in School Leadership. Simultaneously, I attended New York City's New School Intensive, where he planned every aspect of the School for and approval by the New York City Department of Education. Aspirations High School opened in 2008 and was led by Matt for its inaugural three years.
